On the newsfront

Dems seek a vote of no-confidence in Rummy - hmmm same link as yesterday from April 12th...

The world itself is falling apart so NASA plans to leave.

Meanwhile in Alaska (soon to be the new Cozumel) Sec. of the Interior Dick Kempthorne was visiting ANWAR where he said:

"There's a [wildlife] reserve there, but we've seen so many different areas where we can responsibly recover resources and do it while meeting the highest environmental standards. I think it's also important to see it."

Sure Dick, see it before it gets nuked by the oil industry..... all for an estimated 16 billion barrels of oil, at most (3 billion at least). So in 2000 the U.S. was using about 19.6 million barrels of oil per day 20.73 in 2004 (of which the military used 144 million barrels itself over the year - give or take 350,000 barrels which the DoD can't account for). If we low-ball the guesstimate and assume we'll use 20 m b/d there's at most - enough fuel in ANWAR to supply us for 800 days.... or 150 days.... - which isn't too durn much, frankly. I'd rather see wind turbines on every acre of North Dakota, because hey, what else is there.... - no seriously - at least it's a longer term solution to both the oil and the global warming issue. And yes, put them up in my backyard, I'm no NIMBY.

The poor keep getting poorer, according to the Census Bureau which release some new figures for 2005 this week:
- 46.6 million people are now uninsured (at least - and up from 45.3 in 2004 and 41.2 in 2001)
- Adjusted for inflation, men's earnings were lower in 2005 than they were in 1973 (and women are up to 77% of what men earn, mostly because their income dropped less in 2005 then did men's, on average - 1.8 drop for men vs. 1.3 for women )
- And my favorite stat: "The top fifth of American households received 50.4 percent of all income last year, the highest proportion since 1967, when the Census Bureau started following that trend. The biggest gains were concentrated in the top 5 percent."

And here's the distraction of the day.
