What?

Aaron is mad

Someone in this benighted town took down all the Obama yard signs but one.

On that one sign they painted "KKK."

Is this 1960? Do I live in Mississippi (or northern Idaho)?

Quote of the day

Still, there is something remarkable about the idea that the first African-American nominee of a major political party, raised by a single mother, whose shaping political experience was as a community organizer on the mean streets of Chicago, is facing a campaign based in some measure on the idea that he acts like he's too good for us. - SLATE.COM

scariest post apocalyptic post of the day

Man decapitated on Canadian bus

This is truly freaky.

Funny news of the day - not this day, but a day.

Oregon state senator wounded in gun accident

There are several things ironically funny about this incident, all of them make me see the NRA as a bunch of windbag idiots.

Scoop was amazing, this book less so.

How to watch Evelyn Waugh. - By Troy Patterson - Slate Magazine

However, the opening sentence to this piece is perfect, "Evelyn Waugh is the greatest comic novelist of the last 100 years, and
if you somehow dispute this fact, there is simply nothing to be done
for you but a period of house arrest."

My Soul Porpoise

Logos Translations Universal Conjugator

Naturally, language is not my sole purpose, but this site, with this particular word, is rather hilarious.

Nearly as hilarious as learning how to say, "Tá m'árthach foluaineach lán d'eascainn."

Yes, I am 13.

Politics near and far

From the bbc, "Mugabe tells the west to go hang themselves a thousand times."

Again, I was in Zimbabwe a number (in the double digits now) of years ago. It's a horrible tragedy to see the country dissolve into rampant inflation, starvation, political uncertainty, and near civil war. Mugabe came to power after taking part in the successful ouster of the British colonialists in the early 80s. Unfortunately his strong military leadership did not translate into democratic rule. This brings me to the second point; this week Gen. Wes Clark made some asinine statement about McCain's being shot down not serving as an applicable preparation for the oval office.
While this is, for all intents and purposes, a true statement it is about as politically savvy as painting the Cuban flag on your forehead and saying Viva Fidel at a press availability. I wonder at the parallels between Mr. Maverick and Mr. Mugabe. Certainly they are few, but in past presidential races McCain's temper and inability to work with others has been his downfall. Does this inability to negotiate, or even compromise make him a bad candidate?

I hope so, because the countdown to the inevitable election-year meltdown of the democratic party has begun.

GPS, good or bad

I tend to like electronic devices of all stripes. Heck, if I owned an 8-track player I'd find a way to add the tapes to itunes if I was actually old enough to own any 8-tracks. I don't have a GPS, but know intimately how they work having worked for 5 years at a company that makes the database that goes in several of the popular models. This is by far the funniest, and probably the most accurate of reasons why I don't own one. (Although every time I go to Boston I think about buying one.)

The incredible staying power of the laws against interracial marriage. - By David Greenberg - Slate Magazine

"In parts of rural Alabama, he said, probate judges still refuse to issue marriage licenses to interracial couples."

What?

Movie

The Painted Veil was a good, possibly great, movie. I don't like period pieces, or romance movies, or a variety of other genres that this movie touches on. However, much like The Quiet American this movie rose above genre and became what all movies should be; semi-intelligent entertainment (it's still not a book, hence the "semi").

interesting article

How we read online. - By Michael Agger - Slate Magazine

Unfortunately, it implies that we are all getting stupid (see The Daily Show's guest on 6/11 - Rick Shenkman, author of Just How Stupid Are We?: Facing the Truth About the American Voter).

AAAAHHH!

Wait, wasn't that the satellite name in Terminator? The one that became self aware and annihilated humankind?

Gaddafi

Gaddafi attacks Obama on Israel

I know how Anglicizing of Arabic names works, which is why Gaddafi is spelled at least 3 different ways - but it always amuses me when I see it happen. As to this particular link, I can't possibly see how Gaddafi speaking out against Obama could possibly hurt his chances. There's nothing like a stirring rejection by someone who the west generally remembers as a megalomaniac bent on destroying America (despite recent reforms) to boost your campaign credibility.

What?

Hilary Concedes)

Ok, so this is a non news point.
Hillary is not quitting, but just conceding that she lost the delegate count. Now the reason she's not quitting is variously reported as being because:
1. She wants to influence Obama's campaign
2. She wants the VP
or
3. She has too much debt and needs to continue to raise cash in order to be in the black.

Whatever...

Crazy or Sane?

Crazy article from Slate.com

I can't decide whether this concept is crazy or if it would give you a perspective on your spouse and the things they do that you couldn't get just by being perceptive. I'm afraid I'd be overwhelmed by T's busy and creative life if I tried this, which may just be the fear of those with a y chromosome.

So, not only does the wii fit game have the yoga and somewhat silly soccer games that are shown on tv, it also does a cool pseudo-dance-dance revolution type thing.
