Barry?

BBC NEWS | Americas | Jakarta classmates recall 'Barry' Obama

One more note on OCMS, I believe one of the bandmates is from Harrisonburg, but that's an unconfirmed rumor at this point. I do know that they are definitely newgrass being mostly not from the south, much like Gillian Welch.

And yes, Seth, bring Tua down she and Willem can dance to the repeated strains of twangy music.

The boy's favorite song

The video is slightly, uh PG-13, but he likes the song.

And for you Vermonters who occasionally peruse this site, I think the OCMS lead singer looks like Toby.

Last weekend

For those who care, here is what we did last weekend. This bathroom had been only partially finished for far too long.

Oh, and Seth, you don't need a reason to want to go drive the new 3-series, but if my blog made you want to... well, you're welcome.

Localvoyeurism

So in discussing the joys of localvorism with T we've come upon a new term. This term, localvoyeurism, arose because of our trip to Polyface farms. There we were thinking gosh - I hope we can find something like this in Harrisonburg (some 40 miles nearer to our home) so that we don't have to incur the nastiness of the long commute on ourselves and the environment and therefore partially eradicate the ethical reasoning behind the movement. This thought was accompanied by two new BMWs (330xi and a 335xi - if you care, needless to say they aren't cheap) pulling in on either side of us - from Pennsylvania. These people had driven down specifically to get food from Polyface. OK people, it's obviously not local food if you have to drive 150 miles one way. They were there solely for the experience, for the say-so value of the visit. This is the new eco-tourism, and I don't like it.

That being said, we have a nice little farm where we get food that's 1 mile away from the house. So I'm desperately not trying to fall into that new category.

New favorite H-burg news site

quote for the day

The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another; and his humblest hour is when he compares the volume as it is with what he vowed to make it.

What? Come again? You've got to be kidding me.

Apparently Baywatch is less morally corrupting than The Simpsons; who would have guessed?

Ziminabadway

There's nothing like a report of impending violence in Zimbabwe to make you realize that there's still quite a bit of racism and oppression in Zimbabwe 28 years after independence.

Farm life

So for years I've pondered the need for an ecological view of our food system, and for years Polyface farms has existed unvisited in our backyard. Finally we went down and walked around the place. This farm manages to do the whole local, and ecologically sustainable method of farming while still making a profit. What a concept.
